How Microsoft lost the plot in trying to compare a Toyota Corolla to a BMW 650

Lets just do this visually, SAT style:

Very concise visual. I can remember years ago when Jobs used a similar metaphor to explain the “Apple Tax” (this of course was well before this term was coined). Now that the price difference has been virtually eliminated, the build quality/long term value component of the comparison still holds true.

If MSFT executives would focus more of their attention on making great products for their consumers, rather than prohibiting their families from buying Apple products, those same folks might not lust after Apple products.

Mac users often comment that my Sony Vaio FW-290 is better looking than a Macbook. Now you could argue that Vista sucks but it works for me.

Having 8GB of RAM, 1600×900, Intel SSD, HDMI, and Blueray for less than the base Macbook Pro is a win for me and I’m a former Mac user.

Really? I’ll take a Unix based OS any day over something from Redmond. And lots of metal over any plastic.

  5. Jason Sares says:

@Ethan I prefer Unix for development but for day to day desktop use I find Vista works well.

I’ve owned almost every Mac/Powerbook until the latest design. I did like the look of the aluminum but it didn’t wear well.

I would always get scratches and dents over time. So far the plastic on the Sony is holding up better.

I don’t feel your comparison is far because in my case I have a notebook that is very similar in design specs (its a real notebook not a desktop replacement) looks good, and costs half of what the equivalent Macbook Pro does.

I took the difference in price and bought 8GB of RAM and a blazing fast SSD. Overall I’m happier with my purchase.

To fit your analogy it would be a very fast tricked out Nissan 300Z vs BMW 650.

I have a dell portable, docked at work. I would take a mac over the dell and almost over any windows product.
I now have a nice new Mac 24 inch at home, best I have ever had.
mac is so intuitive to a not so computer intuitive guy like me

    That BMW looks awful.
    Macbook does not.
And so the HP laptop (does not).
    These are all relative.
Just like your point of views.

No idea how anyone finds the Mac appealing. Not sleek, boxy and small screen.
