The problem with newspapers isn’t necessarily about how bad their blogs are, its that they don’t, as an online presence have the authenticity of a blog. Newspapers are in a very weird state, in that unless your the NY Times, you’re a regional presence, trying to enforce a locality through a very non-local based system. They are in this inbetween: trying for the authenticity of a blog for their local populace, with the generalities of a global news service. What you end up with is a mix of personality and generic, a mix of authentic and syndicated. Newspapers have to decide WHAT they are, then define from that what they can be online.
