Patti as per usual puts it well: “Hilly Kristal was the good shepherd of a flock
of black sheep. We are forever grateful.” I met Hilly when I was 15 and visiting NYC for the first time since I was a baby. I had been into punk music that year (the Patti Smith NYC era, not the Agent Orange OC era), and my dad and I ventured to East Village (which was not all nice back 13 years ago) to see CBGB’s. It was middle of the day, Hilly was there and amicable and friendly, letting me look around the club. For me at 15, standing on the stage that Talking Heads, Television and Patti stood on was amazing. This week I walked past Bowery and Bleeker, what would be a day before he died, and that aura is still in that area, but its not the same. Rest in peace Hilly. The best artists are only born out of the best catalysts for their creations.
