BetaNews | Yahoo: Lower Page Views Due to AJAX: can someone please explain why we are using PageViews as a metric to measure popularity, when it is known that AJAX lowers PV counts, and MySpace falsely inflates them? Why is this a pissing contest now of a stupid metric?

It’s been a pissing contest since the original bubble. Page Views, Unique Users, User Sessions, Cookied Users, Registered Users, Sticky’ness, etc. etc. etc. I remember when people swore by ‘Media Metrics’. gag.

It’s all about advertising impressions, which at this point AJAX just isnt cut out for in a static display. AJAX ad rotation, oh that’ll be tacky.

I agree..most of this stuff is driven by advertisers…how many hits? how many page view…The problem with Ajax for “page rotation” of ads i guess is that unlike with traditiona refreshing pages..its hard to tell if the use is still viewing so you could be serving ads that noone is seeing ( what advertiser wants that :-) ) http://www.ajaxshack.com
