Exactly what I pondered. So I created my own list, called “The Catalog of Unfindable Web Widgets”

For example, blog archive typically use a calendar. This does not do anything for showing the user where really good, popular, posts are. The alternative is something called a “heat map” showing posts with lots of comments, views, etc.

Most people are simply thrilled for technology for its own sake. They rarely consider the user, or the desirability of web widgets.

People ask whether they can make a widget, not whether they can make a desirable one.
