Music + Technology + Random Nonsense from the Music Industry by Ethan Kaplan, VP Product, Live Nation

Gnomedex comes to the 91505?

Gnomedex Goes Hollywood ~ Chris Pirillo:

The California discrimination is kind of unwarranted.

Its antithetical to want to change the world with technology while ignoring the major tool of cultural evolution (the culture machine itself, freeway close in Burbank, CA). So what is it? A conference which reconfirms your held assumptions about technology (basically the “echo chamger” or ouroboros), which I think is patently lame and very Web 2.0/Etech-ish, or a conference that maybe engages the tools that are there, and mutates them to serve the needs of technology itself?

I won’t go to Gnomedex if I thought it was just “aren’t we precious with our little tools, and my how cute we can be while we change the world for ourselves, with copious blogging and flickr feeds.” Certainly it was in a way, but I thought that everyone was striving for more than that. I went to Gnomedex because I thought (and was proved right), that it was a conference that used technology as a predicate conduit to implement change on a massive scale.

The problem with tech conferences is they breed a sense of entitlement and unwarranted preciousness to our world of technology. It elevates what we do to that of the technical elite, outside of any other spheres (cultural, political, social or otherwise). Gnomedex going to LA is not a threat to the world of techno-elitism. If anything, what it should do (if done right) is provide one avenue for the ideas generated to spill over to the world at large.

And don’t get me started on the absurdity of calling something “old media.” McLuhan would be rolling in his grave.

  1. Good points, but they apply equally to the other side. For instance, I felt that the “old media” people who attended Gnomedex this year gave off a very definite elitist vibe. Just my opinion.

And forgive me for saying “old media”, and not being elite enough in that sphere to know who McLuhan is, or why he would be rolling in his grave. Echo chamber, indeed. :-)

You have got to be kidding me. Marshall McLuhan was a cultural figure in the 60′s. Hardly isolated to “elite” old media. I learned about McLuhan in an art/technology class.

  3. Maybe it’s an age thing, then. I wasn’t even born until the mid 70s. :-)

I wonder what the distribution of Gnomedex attendees who know who McLuhan vs. those who don’t is. Not implying anything by that, just think it would be interesting.

We all live in our own little worlds, I guess.

Marshall McLuhan coined the term \”Global Village\”

I\’d be surprised if any technophile didn\’t know at least his relevance in media history.

Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian that coined a lot of terms, as he had a penchant for trying to make memorable quotes. He was a smart guy too, or perhaps he was just so pompous and well spoken in his presentation that people assumed he was smart and insightful, and so they ran with his re-interpretations of the world. Either way he had a huge impact on the way people, particularly in the media, think of media. “The medium is the message”, meaning that (in one context) we as readers and viewers are a product that media institutions put together and segregate for advertisers to target better than mass advertising.

Unfortunately, Canadians are often incredibly pompous (I say this as a Canadian), so don’t raise him above others as some kind of media god, he was just a smart guy, one of millions.
