The Seattle Times: Business & Technology: The phone of the future: wired to run your life: Nokia has banned their engineers from calling their devices “phones.” This has got me thinking a bit. On my desk I have a device on which I can run my life. I have mail on it, calendars, contacts, todo lists, Google Maps and a yellow pages app. I also have IM and direct to device messaging. The device also has the ability to take my voice, digitize it, and send it to similar devices. The “phone” part (that of analog/digital/analog transmission) is but a small, small part of its over-all utility. Thus I call the device by a proper noun “Blackberry” vs. the generic “phone.” The question is: at what point do we relinquish “phone” to history?
